Tour From Marrakech to The Sahara (4 Days)

Journey to the Sahara through the Atlas Mountains with adventures and details
PRIVATE TOUR
This is one of our favourite journeys around Morocco. It's got everything - Saharan dunes and shady oasis gardens, majestic mountains and rivers, ancient cities and mud-brick villages nestled on mountain slopes. There are enormous fortresses and ancient libraries filled with unique scriptures, bustling non-tourist bazaars and leisurely camel rides, and mind-blowing sunsets and sunrises among the silence of the sandy sea. We will visit places where the ever-rushing tourists don't go. Many anthropologists and ethnologists would only envy us. We'll learn about the history and cultures of three very distinct peoples: Berbers, nomadic Saharawi and the Jews. We will admire the beauty and brevity of ancient technologies and modern innovations for which the country has frequently won many international prizes. We'll have an opportunity to try our hand at a variety of crafts and, if you wish, we can get to know the locals better, help them with harvesting or cook a traditional meal together. If we're lucky, we might even attend a camel race. We will tell you many stories during the trip. So many that you could even write your own book about them later :) Many people tell us that this journey has marvellously changed their lives. Shall we give it a try?

If you don't have much time, you can go on a three-day visit to the Sahara. But we would strongly suggest you take an extra day and choose this particular four-day trip.

Day 1.
Marrakech – The Tizi-n-Tichka Pass - Ouarzazate – The Draa River Valley – The Tissergate fortress village - Zagora.
350km, 7 hours on the road

We will depart from Marrakech early in the morning. This way, we'll have time to admire the beautiful views of mountains, oases, and desert landscapes and get acquainted with the life of their people, their traditions, history, crafts, and of course, their national cuisine. There will be many stops along the way. We will walk through palm groves and shady oasis gardens in the Draa valley, visit the Berber stronghold village Tissergate and solve many brainteasers in the local museum. We'll have lunch in an unusual but delicious place and learn how to make Argan oil, bake bread and read the language of beautiful jewellery and tattoos. In Zagora, we will see the thousand-year-old fortress of Almoravid and the 'gateway' to the Sahara. Here, camel trains made up of thousands of camels would transport gold, precious fabrics, spices, enslaved people, and salt. If we're lucky, we might even see the camel races held all year round! In addition to a day full of lasting impressions, beautiful views, events and information, we will do many other entertaining activities. We will be sure to end this amazing day with a wonderful dinner and an overnight stay in the hotel you've booked in Zagora.

Day 2.
Zagora - The Amezrou Jewish fortress - The Tamegroute village - The M'Hamid oasis - The Erg Chigaga dunes.
140 km, 3 hours on the road

Straight after breakfast, we'll head to a palm grove, in the middle of which is a vast 12th-century Jewish fortress. We'll take a stroll through a maze of streets in the Jewish district and learn about the fascinating history of the Jewish people in Morocco. We will stop by one of the most picturesque villages of the desert, which also happens to be the ancient centre for one of the most influential Sufi orders in the world. We will see some unique and beautiful manuscripts in an ancient library (in the middle of a desert!). The range of authors and the vastness of the collection will undoubtedly be overwhelming. We will learn about traditional and eco-architecture, underground houses, and beautiful ceramics. We will even try our hand at various crafts and create ourselves a lucky charm. It is not a touristy place at all, and we will have an excellent opportunity to immerse ourselves in the real life of the people of the desert. After lunch, we will take a camel ride to our campsite in the heart of the Erg Chigaga Dune Sea. We will experience the most beautiful sunset and spend the evening under a magnificent sky full of stars. We will have dinner and an overnight stay at our camp in the middle of the Sahara.

Day 3.
Erg chigaga - Antiatlas – The "Rally Paris - Dakar" track - Foum Zguid.
300 km, 5.5 hours on the road

After enjoying the sunrise over the dunes and having breakfast, we'll take a jeep ride across the desert. We'll visit the oasis where the world's tastiest dates grow. We'll also encounter marvellous forms of mineral weathering, and we'll see the mountainous landscapes of The Anti-Atlas, the settlements of Sahrawi and visit the Berber villages. If desired, we can learn how to bake bread or make Tajin and try our hand at making pottery, blacksmithing or weaving. In our view, this is where the most beautiful ceramics and carpets in Morocco are made. We will arrive in Ouarzazate in the evening. We will have dinner and an overnight stay in your booked hotel.

Day 4.
Ouarzazate - Aït-Ben-Haddou - The High Atlas - The Tizi-n-Tichka Pass - Marrakech.
205 km, 4 hours on the road

We'll start the day with a visit to the world's biggest film studio, Atlas Studios. Episodes of Game of Thrones, Aladdin, Gladiator and many other films were shot here. After a walk among biblical temples, Egyptian pyramids and Tibetan monasteries, we'll visit the grand Berber fortress of Aït-Ben-Haddou. You may even recognise it from many films. We'll visit the local bazaar and lose ourselves in the mysterious alleyways of this remarkable monument of architecture and history. In this fantastic place, we have to take lots of photos. After lunch, we'll travel through the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass and return to Marrakech by 5 pm.
