Serbians believe that if you want to understand their country, you should sit at the table and share a glass of Serbian wine. And the best place for that is Srem and Fruška Gora. That’s exactly where we’re heading today on our Serbian wine tour.

And not just because the local vineyards are a couple of thousand years old, planted — depending on which legend you believe — either by order of Roman emperors or with the blessing of Christian saints. But because in Srem it’s impossibly beautiful, tasty, fascinating, and some local wines - the indigenous Probus, sparkling Grašac Beli, Riesling, Merlot - are devilishly good and valued by connoisseurs and wine lovers all over the world. And of course, Bermet, infused with more than twenty herbs and spices, once served at the Habsburg court. And, they say, even on the Titanic.

We’ll be tasting the finest wines at our favorite wineries, strolling through the charming little town of Sremski Karlovci and the plum orchards of a medieval Orthodox monastery, gazing at frescoes (after all, we are traveling through the “Serbian Mount Athos”). We’ll meet wonderful, passionate people, listen to amazing stories, admire the rolling green hills, the tiny villages with neat houses, vineyards, and blooming gardens. And then taste more wonderful wines. For lunch - lavish, in true Serbian style, we’ll sit down in a real family tavern to enjoy lamb shank, pljeskavica, ćevapi, fresh trout, and anything else the heart desires. All together, it’s the most enjoyable way to get to know Serbian culture.

That’s how our day will be: full of hedonism, indulgence, and complete harmony with the world around us. Tell me, have you ever felt the urge to own a vineyard and dedicate your life to this beautiful and noble craft? :)

And if you are a professional, or if you’re planning to dive deeper into this noble field, if it matters to you not only to taste the finest wines but also to talk with their creators about the fine points of the craft, take a look at our winery tour designed especially for you.

What We’ll See During Our Serbian Wine Tour:

On our wine tour of Serbia, of course, the highlights will be the outstanding wineries. But not only that. We’ll also see:
  • Sremski Karlovci — Serbia’s most wine-producing and one of its most picturesque little towns,
  • The “Four Lions” Fountain,
  • The Chapel of Our Lady of Peace, where the Great Turkish War - and the presence of the Ottoman Empire in Central Europe - finally came to an end.
  • The Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas,
  • An old pharmacy with an interior crafted in Venice.
  • At least two wineries with tastings, plus a guided tour of one of them:
-Vinarija Vinum with numerous international awards, the first in Serbia to produce sparkling Grašac Beli and one of the country’s best Bermet (both white and red),
-Vinarija Kiš, the oldest family winery in Srem, awarded for its Rosé, Bermet, and excellent Portugieser,
-Vinarija Deurić, a winery with a strong focus on terroir, international awards, and a modern wine style,
-or the Živanović family winery with its beekeeping tradition, producing wine for seven generations.
  • A ceramic workshop,
  • The Patriarch’s Palace and the theological seminary,
  • The medieval Orthodox monastery of Jazak,
  • The family tavern “Stari Orah”,
and much more.

And if we’re lucky with the day of the week, we’ll finish our journey at yet another winery: an actual estate with an old mill, vineyards, a carp pond, and a picturesque garden. And most importantly - with wonderful hosts.

What We’ll Do:
from tastings to uncovering the secrets of the past

  • Settling down on a terrace overlooking the vineyards or in an old wine cellar, we’ll taste all kinds of wines, from outstanding sparkling wines and fragrant Rieslings to Rosé, the rare indigenous Probus, and the legendary Bermet.
  • In a cozy family tavern we’ll pay tribute to homemade Serbian cuisine: čorba, Karađorđe's schnitzel (Karađorđeva šnicla), goulash, kielbasa-style sausage (kobasica), pljeskavica, homemade bacon, carp, trout, and more. And let’s not forget quince brandy, Dunja.
  • We’ll try the Swabian cake kuglof (or gugelhupf), which even has its very own national-scale festival.
  • We’ll drink water from the fountain… or maybe we won’t. That depends on you.
  • We’ll meet wonderful, fascinating people and get to know Serbian traditions of hospitality.
  • We’ll uncover a few secrets of the distant past.
  • We’ll pick out the best gifts you could possibly bring back from Serbia.
  • And we’ll drink more excellent wine. Because, as Churchill once said: in wine there is wisdom, in water there are microbes.
